The Bronze Age Rise

Proto-Elamite & Elamite Empire

Between 3200 BC and 2700 BC, the Iranian plateau underwent a major cultural revolution. This era, known as the Proto-Elamite period, saw the development of one of the world's earliest writing systems and the formalization of government.

The Birth of Writing

The Proto-Elamite script is one of the oldest known scripts in human history, used mainly for accounting and trade records. Hundreds of clay tablets have been found in Susa, showing a highly organized society that kept track of its resources.

Historical Fact: The Elamite civilization was a neighbor and often a rival to the famous Sumerians of Mesopotamia. While Sumer built its cities in modern-day Iraq, the Elamites built theirs in the mountains and plains of Southwestern Iran.

The Elamite Empire (3200 - 539 BC)

Elam was not just a single city but a powerful confederation of different regions. Their culture was unique, with their own language (which is an isolate, meaning it's not related to any other known language) and distinct religious practices.

Chogha Zanbil: A Religious Marvel

The Elamites were master builders. Their most famous creation, the Chogha Zanbil Ziggurat, is one of the best-preserved examples of step-pyramid architecture in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
